Counterfeiting Kills

Each year, the counterfeiting of well-known brands and products continues to rise, creating an even more threatening problem. Such well-known counterfeited brands, including consumer safety and critical electrical products, are estimated to be five to seven percent of world trade. The International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC) estimates that the counterfeiting of distinguished brands costs industries $600 billion each year worldwide and may result in as many as 750,000 lost jobs every year in the United States.

Life Safety & Security Systems: Balancing Proactive Security with Privacy

The potential of building automation systems (BAS) to enhance security is undeniable. Networks of sensors, intelligent analytics, and integration with access control and surveillance systems create new possibilities for real-time threat detection, proactive responses, and streamlined emergency procedures. However, these capabilities also bring privacy concerns to the forefront, highlighting the essential need to carefully balance the desire for a more secure environment with the fundamental right to privacy for building occupants.

The Benefits of BAS for Building Security

Let's first examine how BAS can revolutionize building security practices. Traditionally, security has been largely reactive, focusing on responding to alarms or incidents after they occur. BAS enable a shift toward proactive security. By analyzing sensor data for unusual access attempts, occupancy patterns that deviate from the norm, or environmental changes that could signal a developing issue, BAS can alert security personnel to potential threats...

Building a Breath of Fresh Air: BAS and Indoor Air Quality

Modern buildings prioritize energy efficiency and aesthetics, but sometimes at the expense of indoor air quality (IAQ). Poor IAQ can lead to respiratory problems, allergies, and decreased occupant comfort and productivity. Fortunately, Building Automation Systems (BAS) offer a powerful solution,...

Optimizing Energy Consumption with Demand Response

Building Automation Systems (BAS) play a crucial role in optimizing energy consumption within buildings. However, BAS can extend their reach beyond individual buildings and contribute to the stability and efficiency of the entire power grid. This is achieved through Demand Response (DR) programs,...

Wireless Sensor Networks and the Impact on HVAC Monitoring

Traditional building automation systems have often relied on a relatively sparse network of wired sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, and perhaps a few other basic parameters. Wireless sensor networks are disrupting this model, enabling the deployment of far denser arrays of sensors,...
